The English National Ballet, which was founded by two former Ballet Russes dancers, has commissioned Karl Lagerfeld to design their costumes.

Lagerfeld has designed a series of costumes including a winged tutu for The Dying Swan, the famous four-minute solo originally choreographed for Ballet Russes dancer Anna Pavlova in 1905.

“As a child, I was impressed by old images of Pavlova dancing that ballet,” said Lagerfeld.

“I have seen his drawing of the tutu – it looks so light, almost alive. We always say that the look is 50 per cent of how you are going to dance, so it is very important to have a beautiful costume,” she said.

The English National Ballet performs Ballets Russes at Sadler’s Wells on 16–20 June.
